João Maia

Born in Lisbon, in 1975, I’ve been interested in travelling to faraway places since childhood. Not being able to make those travels at the time, I kept myself happy by browsing through books and magazines with stories about those places.

The choices I made throughout life took me to study Software Engineering, but the pleasure of travelling to discover new places and new cultures has always remained. After graduating, when I started travelling more often, I began to realise that photography could be an excellent means of exploring the places where I went and of sharing with other people my experiences in those places.

In 2001 I took an Introduction to Photography course in Lisbon and since then I’ve been more and more interested in areas like travel, landscape and nature photography.

I’ve been learning some techniques in these areas of photography mainly by reading books and articles and experimenting, although I have also participated in some nature photography workshops by some Portuguese photographers (José Romão, António Sá, Luis Quinta).

Today, even though I’m still working as a Software Engineer, I am also developing my activity as an amateur photographer around the Lisbon area.
